Chapter 10. Q.1

In the book Think, chapter 10 is about the advertisement system and marketing type that companies and organizations utilize today. As a college student, and I think I speak for most college when I say Starbucks is most popular with us, Starbucks is one of the places I frequently visit. When thinking of what to write for this assignment I realized that I have never seen Starbucks ads on any billboard. Starbucks ads and marketing takes a different route by appearing on the world wide web and also on every street corner. Their name is well known but I believe that once one has walked into a Starbucks, their environment is what sells them. I am always satisfied with the service Starbucks provides and if I am not, and this is rare, Starbucks is always quick to offer a drink on them. I think business's who are willing to have customers walk away happy is good marketing! Within their store, Starbucks has an immense amount of products to sell that are being advertised around the store with pictures and small descriptions about them.

  1. I am not the biggest Starbucks drinker, but I agree that the company is great in advertising and attracting customers. First off, the atmosphere of their coffee shops is always so cozy and welcoming. Who would not want to go in there and get a drink to relax or read? Just picturing it makes me want to go to Starbucks. Haha. Also, I noticed in their previous commercials that they use different people, as in nationalities, so that also suggests that it’s a friendly company. Like you mentioned, they have a lot of different products like tumblers, mugs, etc. with their ever-so-popular logo which only attracts even more people.

  2. Starbucks is a great example for this discussion. Now that you have brought it up they advertise less with billboards because you hardly see those being presented to us. Unlike the Apple products you see that almost every city you go. Maybe there aren’t a lot of billboard ads here in the bay area but maybe in other cities. But yes they do a lot of media advertising and that’s what they are also strong for. I agree with you that when people go to the actual Starbucks, it is their environment that sells. They have cemented their logo, and great taste of coffee into this world thus making them a good business.

  3. I think your observation of Starbucks is very interesting. I never really thought about the fact that Starbucks doesn't really advertise their stores anywhere other than in the stores. I think that they use the let their product speak for itself motto instead of trying to over market Starbucks. I love the atmosphere of their coffee shops and I think the welcoming environment they create helps them advertise. I agree with you about their customer service skills. I love that they offer those coupons if they mess up a drink. A combination of the way they handle business and charging $5 for a specialty coffee, helps them market well and run a globally successful business.

  4. I really like how you brought up starbucks. I am not really a big fan of coffee, but if I do, I actually go to starbucks. You made an interesting point, where starbucks only advertises internally within the company. I feel as if they get a lot of advertising through their gift cards. Starbucks gift cards are a good marketing strategy because no matter what the circumstance is, people will enjoy starbucks. It could be for a white elephant party during Christmas, or even a birthday party. Starbucks is still promoting through their giftcards. The atmosphere is also a good way how they attract customers. The free wi-fi and music brings makes a comfortable environment.

  5. I think that's really interesting about Starbucks. I noticed that sometimes they have a long line and people are all standing there waiting. Little do they know, they are passively being advertised to. All the different items on the shelves such as a brand new coffee maker or espresso machine would make a nice addition to our new kitchen counter. Starbucks is selling their products without the customers even knowing. People will mugs and different coffee beans all because they were standing in line waiting for a cup of coffee for no more than five minutes. That's a very smart strategy that Starbucks is using. Starbucks gets a lot of their business from college kids like myself =).

  6. Hello Aliana Grey,
I agree with what you said about how Starbucks always has good customer service. This is a good marketing strategy. Having everyone know for a fact that your company has excellent customer service is essential to any business. This will make a lot of people come back to the coffee shop just out of pure happiness. The good morale of all the employees makes for a good experience which is all the consumer wants since they will almost always get what they want food/drink-wise, and this is exactly what the company wants. They have mastered this marketing strategy because whenever I go there I have a good experience.
